MindShare eBook FAQs

  • I have made comments in my eBook, but it will not let me save the comments!! Help!!

Don’t worry, you CAN save the comments that you spent all day creating. Currently with Adobe Reader, in order to save comments, you must go to the following menu item:

    • Document -> Comments -> Export Comments to Data File…

This will save all your comments in a separate file (which has the same name as your eBook/Presentation pdf, but with an FDF extension). Then anytime you would like to view your comments again, just open up the FDF file. This will open the original eBook and put all the comments and markups in their original location plus it will summarize all the comments you made on the bottom of Adobe Reader and allow you to jump to a specific comment.

You can continue to take more comments and by following the same process will continue to save these comments for later viewing.

This is only required for Adobe Reader. If you have full Adobe Acrobat, then you can save the comments natively in the PDF.

  • I have downloaded the eBook but when I try and open it, I just get a blank screen in Acrobat.

When opening an eBook on a machine for the first time, Acrobat should notify you that a plugin is missing and must be installed before the document can be successfully opened. In some cases you may not see that message which results in Acrobat only opening a blank screen. You can find directions for manually installing the necessary plugin on MindShare’s How eBooks Work page.

  • I cannot find the necessary plugin to view my eBook.

In most cases Acrobat will correctly identify that a plugin is needed to open these eBooks and can take you to the page where the plugin can be installed from, but in some cases Acrobat isn’t that nice and we have to do it manually. You can find directions for manually installing the necessary plugin on MindShare’s How eBooks Work page.

  • I get prompted to “authenticate” before the eBook will open, why? And what is it asking for?

MindShare’s eBooks are protected by an Acrobat plugin from FileOpen. This plugin requires a user to authenticate themselves as being authorized to view the eBook before the PDF will open. So the pop up in Acrobat asking you to enter your MindShare account login info which will be sent to mindshare.com and verify that your account is authorized to view that eBook. So you must be connected to the internet for the authentication to take place. After Acrobat has authenticated your MindShare account, the eBook is now authorized on that machine. You are allowed to have an eBook activated on up to 3 machines at once.

  • When you purchase a MindShare eBook, that is an individual license for that eBook and it should not be shared.

  • Can I print my eBook?

Yes. MindShare’s eBooks are printable in low resolution format. However you will be required to re-authenticate after 3 print sessions.

  • What do I get when I purchase an eBook from mindshare.com?

In order to purchase an eBook from mindshare.com, you must have a MindShare account. This is because once you purchase an eBook, that eBook is associated with your account so you will always be able to download and access it.
After purchasing an eBook, you will receive an email describing how to access your eBook and what its attributes are. You can also find this info on MindShare’s How eBooks Work page. All of MindShare’s eBooks are in PDF form and are protected by an Acrobat plugin from FileOpen.

  • How long will I have the eBook?

Once you have purchased the eBook, it is yours. You may have the eBook activated on up to 3 machines at once. If you change machines in the future you can deactivate the eBook on a machine and reactivate it on a new one. This can be done through the “My eBooks/Presentations” tab of your MindShare account. You are allowed three deactivations before being required to contact MindShare for more deactivations.

  • Does MindShare support other eBook formats besides just PDFs?

Currently MindShare’s eBooks are only available in PDF form, but if we determine that there is a lot of demand to provide our eBooks in another format, please let us know. We want to do what makes sense for our customers. You can provide feedback on the eBooks here:
  • What are the benefits of purchasing an eBook?

In most cases, eBooks are cheaper than paper books. Your eBook will be available to you immediately once you have purchased it. Here are some characteristics that make eBooks a great supplement to your hardcopy versions of MindShare’s books:

    • Searchable
    • Indexed and cross-referenced (you can click on any reference to a Table, Figure, Section, etc and go exactly to that point)
    • Available immediately after purchasing
    • Expand the mind without exhausting the arms (yes, a lot of our hardcopy books are heavy)
    • Colored graphics
    • Available wherever you go with internet access
